Prince made First Avenue famous with his 1984 movie “Purple Rain,” but Minneapolis boasts many more excellent music clubs – and our hometown superstar was a frequent guest.

Dakota Jazz Club
1010 Nicollet Mall, Mpls.The more intimate and upscale Dakota Jazz Club, which seats 275 people, has presented everyone from Chick Corea and Judy Collins to the Bad Plus and Prince, who attended a show at the Dakota two nights before he died.

First Avenue
701 N 1st Av., Mpls.Since opening night with Joe Cocker in 1970, First Avenue has been presenting newcomers, stars and future legends, including U2, Nirvana and, yes, Prince, who made the club famous after filming “Purple Rain” there. Check the silver stars painted on the exterior to see who’s played at First Ave. The 1,500-capacity club will offer some daytime tours and nighttime gigs.
